Gratefulness Amid Damaging Disappointment
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed (I Peter 2:24).
Last month, this missive entertained the idea of God's reign--even when the outcomes are disappointing. Disappointment is harassing and emotionally disturbing; and it can usher in grief. Grief may torment the inner spirit, resulting in crushing hindrances, handicaps, and harm. In these unwelcoming spaces, there is a helpful position to assume. This outlook is that God's gracious mercy, compassion, and faithfulness produce hope for restoration.
When there is brokenness due to sorrow, one's drive toward restoration from the harmful disturbance is weakened (Proverbs 17:22). Rehabilitation of a downtrodden mindset requires a grateful outlook. The dark night of the soul can evolve into the break of day when a grateful perspective is employed. It is important, however, to reflect on one's position, or standing, when disappointing circumstances are depressing. Thankfulness, for example, diminishes the effect of disappointment, for it is true: "The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him" (Psalm 28:7, English Standard Version). Expectation of strength and protection, along with trustful and thankful outlooks, generates thoughts of help and hope.
In this season of thankfulness, it is comforting to remember current circumstances do not dictate divine promises. God's unfailing compassion brings results with unimaginable satisfaction. This hopeful outlook can sustain and restore a hindered spirit.
